Tuneer, his little sister and his parents moved to Australia from India in 2010. India has the worlds second highest populations, second only to China, with the most recent data claiming over 1.2 billion people. Bordering countries include Burma, Nepal, China, Pakistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. There are many problems families face when living in India, none bigger than poverty. A lack of readily available resources, such as physicians (60 per every 100,000 people in India) or clean drinking water (around 900,000 Indians die each year from drinking contaminated water or breathing in polluted air), continues to harm the development of the country. This has led to large numbers of Indians seeking a better life in Australia, with many currently residing in the City of Greater Dandenong.
Tuneer currently attends a high school in Dandenong, and spends most of his time fixing his hair or wanting to play games on other people’s iPhones. His English skills have improved dramatically since arriving in Australia, and he is becoming more confident each and every day. Tuneer’s little sister Mimansa now receives weekly tutoring thanks to DFM, and we have had opportunities to assist his mother Jaya with her studies. We are happy our relationship with Tuneer has paved the way for us to assist another wonderful family in the City of Greater Dandenong.
